Chapter One — Carter Road, Six a.m.

Shanti photographed the sea at dawn because that was the only hour it behaved.

By eight, Carter Road belonged to the walkers and the laughing-club uncles and the women in salwar-kameez doing brisk diagonal laps with their dupattas pinned down hard against the wind off the water. But at six it was just the tide coming in over the black rocks, the light still making up its mind what colour to be, and Shanti at the sea wall with her camera and her terrible flask of twice-boiled coffee, crouched like she was waiting for the water to confess to something.

Priya found her there because Priya always found her there. It was the one fixed point in either of their weeks, the nail the rest of the tent hung from.

"You look like you slept in a tandoor," Shanti said, without turning round.

"And good morning to you too."

"I mean it. You've got that—" Shanti made a vague circling motion at her own face, then lifted the camera and fired off three frames of a fishing boat sliding in past the rocks. "That boardroom face. You wore it to my birthday. I have not forgiven you."

Priya sat down on the wall. The stone was already warm under her, despite the hour, holding yesterday's heat the way the city held everything — too long, and close to the chest.
